The Mayflower Society

In 1620, a brave group of 102 men, women, and children sailed across the Atlantic on the Mayflower in search of a better life.
In 1897, the General Society of Mayflower Descendants was established to pay homage to the Pilgrims through preservation and education.

The General Society of Mayflower Descendants is committed to research on the lineal descent of the Mayflower Pilgrims and education about the Pilgrims who traveled aboard the Mayflower in 1620. The Society provides education and understanding of why the Mayflower Pilgrims were important, how they shaped western civilization, and what their 1620 voyage means today and its impact on the world.

Think you're eligible to join this Society? Want to know more? Visit www.themayflowersociety.org. All your questions will be answered and your interest heightened!

The Society also offers a channel on YouTube....... several short videos will help you know more about this group and their goals. One really good vid is "Things They Left Behind," presented by the Gov. General, Lisa Pennington.

Genealogy Shows & Movies

I've discovered that there are more genealogy-related movies available to me on my iPad that I'd have guessed!  I just watched (for free on YouTube!!) Yesterday's Children, where Jane Seymour in today's time is driven to learn about a family 80 years ago in Ireland and reunite that family. It was SO good.

And certainly Finding Your Roots is THE NUMBER ONE genealogy show on public TV. Did you realize you can watch PBS shows on your phone, Kindle or iPad for free????

And of course there are more history-museums-archaeology type videos posted on YouTube than you'd have time to enjoy. There is the History Channel, Archaeology Channel, etc. All free!

So no need to watch dreary, depressing, or silly TV shows unless that's your thing. There are genealogy shows to enjoy!!!

YouTube Channels for Genealogy

I follow James Tanner's Genealogy's Star blog (and I do recommend it to you) for he always has good teaching. Few weeks back he did a post about YouTube channels for genealogy. Besides the piece of his blog I snipped and posted here, there are probably hundreds of genealogy or history related channels on YouTube. Go learn something today!

YouTube: A Resource You Should Use

"YouTube is a free video sharing website on the internet. The website lets people upload, view, and share videos. ... Videos can be rated with likes or dislikes, and viewers can subscribe to channels they like. Videos can be commented on if viewers log into their own accounts."

This is the posted official definition of what YouTube is, but what might it mean to YOU?

To me, YouTube means that FamilySearch offers me 298 videos to watch on my laptop or iPad or phone from the comfort of my chair. YouTube means I'm offered 298 learning opportunities from FamilySearch on YouTube.

Ancestry offers me 1108 videos!  MyHeritage offers 383 videos.

These little videos rang from minutes to just over an hour. At Walmart I bought a pair of $12 earphones which I plug into my iPad to hear better what I'm watching.

And if I get brain-dead from too much genealogy learning I can always see what Crusoe the Celebrity Dachshund is up to, or learn that chopped up banana peels soaked in water make a very good fertilizer water for houseplants. :-)

Try it out for yourself. I think you'll enjoy what you find and see.
