• Ancestry launched its new Probate and Wills collection today: 170 million pages of records from from all 50 states spread over 337 years (1668-2005). These are searchable by name. To celebrate, this collection PLUS all of Ancestry's birth, marriage, and death records are FREE to access NOW through Monday, September 7th, at 8:59 p.m. Pacific Time. Keep in mind:
• The collections are not complete for each state. Counties are missing, some just have indexes, some date ranges are limited.
• "Probates and Wills" can mean other court records, too. I found divorce, guardianship, and commitment papers (to a state hospital) for several individuals I was searching.
• If you don't already have an Ancestry subscription, you'll need to create a free login.
• For best results, use the "Any Event" search fields (date, location) rather than the "Death" search field.

• The website of the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS), AmericanAncestors.org, is offering free access to their Census, Tax and Voters Lists from now until Wednesday, September 9th. 
• If you don't already have an AmericanAncestors subscription, you'll need to create a free login.
• They tend to have a lot of New York State records, so if you don't have New England ancestors, but do have New York ones, check it out.

Fold3 Opening War of 1812 Images for Free During June

I received the following message from Matthew Deighton of Ancestry/Fold3:

... Fold3 will be opening up all of their War of 1812 records to the public for free during June. This is in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the commencement of the war. The collection consists of more than 400,000 images including 233,000 images from the War of 1812 Pension Files never before available online. The following databases provided for free included:

How do I get access to ArkivDigital archives for free?

To gain access to ArkivDigital and ADOnLine2 for free, you have to do a few things. It's quite easy and we are sure you will manage - just follow the instructions below carefully.

1. Register as a new member
   • If you are already registered, go to the next paragraph.
   • If you are not already registered as a member, you will have to do the following: - Go to: http://www.arkivdigital.net/users/register and fill in the requested information. Be extra careful to write the correct E-mail address and password you choose. The password must be at least 6 characters and/or digits.
2. Install the program ADOnLine2, http://www.arkivdigital.net/products/adonline/installation If you haven't the latest version installed, we advise you to install it now. The latest version is called 1.4.1. You can check which version you have if you open the program, click the Hjälp (Help) menu and then click Om (About). You can also try our English beta version.
3. During installation, you will be prompted to answer some questions. You must respond to them "positively" and when the installation is complete, you should have a new icon called ADOnLine2 on your Desktop.
4. Double click the icon to start the program...
5. and the login box will pop up. Please enter your login information (Email and Password). Be sure to enter it in exactly the same as you did when you registered - capital and lowercase letters are significant.
   If you are receiving an error message regarding E-post/Lösenord (Email / Password) some information is wrong. Click to clear the error messages and then use the Arkiv menu (File menu) and then "Logga in" (Log in). Now, the login box pops up again. Erase all information and fill in the correct information again.
6. Once you have logged in and you're now in the program and can start your research.
7. To the left is a list of Archive Holders. Find for "your" parish/church in the list or type the name of it directly into the search field above. Click on the name in the list to select it.
8. When you have selected your parish, the list of volumes from your chosen parish will show up. Search for a volume in the list and double click the left mouse button to open the volume.
9. When the volume is opened you can browse it with -5, -1, +1 and +5 or in the drop down list (between -1 and +1).

• If you are completely without function you can try to install an older version of the program. At the bottom of the Installation page you can find links to older versions. Sometimes they work better.
• If you have automatic login checked and receiving an error message regarding "E-post/Lösenord" (Email/password), close the error messages and then click the Arkiv menu (File menu), then click "Logga In" (log in). Now, the login box pops up again. Erase all data and type them again.

Memorial Day Events and Activities

While many of our members may be out at the lake, or camping, or visiting relatives over the three-day weekend, some of us are still in town. The Spokesman-Review has a listing of area events to honor our military dead, one of which is the dedication of the new Washington State Veterans Cemetery near Medical Lake.

Another activity you may like to do is to create memorial pages for free at the Find A Grave website for your ancestors and relatives. If you would like to really focus on your military ancestors, submit information to the Sons of Union Veterans National Graves Registration Database (they also take submissions for Confederate veterans), and/or the World War II Memorial. Both sites are free to use and submit information to, and great ways to memorialize the military veterans in your families. The latter accepts information about World War II -era individuals who served in some way towards the war effort, whether or not they were actually in the military. If you have a Rosie the Riveter or USO, Red Cross, or other volunteer in your family tree, be sure to honor them! Our own Carol Nettles did a great presentation on this website for a members-only computer class, and if you would like to receive the syllabus--or a Find A Grave syllabus I created--drop me a line here.

Facebook for Genealogists Cheat Sheet

Wanting to join Facebook but not sure how to go about doing it? Already a member, but needing a little help with your settings?  Thomas MacEntee of High-Definition Genealogy has created a Facebook for Genealogists cheat sheet. This free downloadable and printable chart gives step-by-step directions on how to create an account, edit your settings, monitor your privacy, and deal with annoyances such as hiding your birthday or deleting friends.

Historical Newspapers for Free on Footnote During May

I just received an announcement from Footnote.com. During the month of May all the historical newspapers on Footnote.com will be open to the public. A free registration is needed to view the images.

On Footnote you will find newspapers ranging from small towns to major cities and dating back to the 1700’s. Whether a historian or a genealogist, historical newspapers are one of the best resources that provide a unique window into the past.

Free Access to World Vital Records

World Vital Records has announced free access to their databases from December 23 - December 28, 2009. This is free as in no credit card number is needed! I went to their website and the following pop-up window appeared:

UPDATE: I just received information from an employee of World Vital Records that this IS access to the ENTIRE website, including the World Collection!

They are also offering 40% off their World Collection Membership through Monday, December 28th. Instead of $99.95 for an annual subscription, it has been reduced to $59.95, at an average of $4.99 a month.

My recommendation? Check out their free access and then determine if this is a subscription you will find useful. If so, take your opportunity and sign up for the reduced subscription!

Lost Cousins is Completely Free Until 2008!

I received the following message today in an e-mail:

The LostCousins website has a unique system that identifies living relatives who share the same ancestors automatically, confidentially, and with virtually 100% accuracy. It's all done using census data, most of which is available free online at the FamilySearch site.

The more relatives you enter on your My Ancestors page, the better your chance of finding a cousin immediately - and the more cousins you'll find over time.
